Ahlan Lounge @B is now open and welcoming guests at the Dubai International Airport

Ahlan Lounge @B, located at Terminal 3, Concourse B, near Gate B26 at the Dubai International Airport is now open for guests and transit passengers’. The lounge is launching a new International menu along with a safe experience keeping in mind all the precautions and guidelines.

Taking full advantage of the downtime last few months, the Dubai International Hotel opted for a holistic, creative route to keep perfecting its offerings through in-house Cooking Classes that would benefit all of its chefs. This has resulted in creating a world-class menu keeping in mind their guest preferences and tastes!

Home to 4 distinct dining outlets and two executive lounges serving a selection of international delicacies, the hotel has a dynamic culinary team of 50 members. The 5-Star Airport hotel's Management and Executive Chef devised a resourceful use of the situation to strengthen the overall operations of its culinary team! During the lockdown the skills of the culinary team were tested through an examination, which helped the management ascertain the extent of their cooking prowess. Next, every member was assigned a specific curriculum for their "Cooking Class", based on their skills and level of expertise.

"Dubai International Hotel has always been proactive in assisting our guests and delivering the finest hospitality. Drawing inspiration from global brands to boost morale and solidarity in their respective communities, we too reflected inwards to help our associates and fine-tune our services further. All members of our culinary team trained to diversify their culinary talents and attended the workshop, where they worked on enhancing their personal portfolio with vital skills and gain mastery over different cuisines," shares Stéphane Blanc, Food & Beverage Consultant, Dubai International Hotel.

The lounge will continue to adhere to strict health and hygiene regulations; temperature checks, thorough sanitization, social distancing norms, QR codes for menu and newspapers and limited exposure with associates.

Airbus to scrap A380 production by 2021 as Emirates orders 70 smaller jets

Emirates reaches agreement on A380s with Airbus, airline to receive 14 more A380s by end of 2021, as superjumbo production ends

Emirates airline ordered 70 Airbus jets at a value of $21.5 billion (Dh78.97bn) and reached an agreement with the plane manufacturer to receive 14 more A380s, whose production will stop by 2021.

Emirates ordered 40 A330-900 aircraft and 30 A350-900 jets, the airline said in a statement on Thursday. The latest generation of A330neo and A350 aircraft, will be delivered to Emirates starting from 2021 and 2024, respectively.

The Toulouse plane manufacturer and Emirates reached an agreement on the outstanding A380 deliveries, according to which the airline will receive 14 more double-decker jets from 2019 through to the end of 2021.

These deliveries will take Emirates' total A380 order book to 123 units, a drop from the original 162 figure.

“While we are disappointed to have to give up our order and sad that the programme could not be sustained, we accept that this is the reality of the situation," said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates.

The A380 is a "differentiator" for Emirates and the aircraft "will remain a pillar" of its fleet until the 2030s, he added.

Emirates, which shunned the double-decker at the 2017 Dubai Airshow for Boeing's 787s, salvaged the A380's production in January of last year with an order for 20 more jets as the future of the superjumbo was in question.

Until that point, Airbus had not sold the aircraft dubbed the flying palace in more than two years. Emirates, which invested billions of dollars to establish a transportation hub in Dubai, had demanded that Airbus commit to a production timeline of at least a decade due to a lack of traction from other airlines for the aircraft and the absence of a secondary market for the jet.

But even with Emirate's order, the market dynamics didn't change for the A380, making it the second most iconic aircraft to be retired after the Concorde ceased operating in 2003.

“As a result of this decision we have no substantial A380 backlog, and hence no basis to sustain production, despite all our sales efforts with other airlines in recent years. This leads to the end of A380 deliveries in 2021,” said Airbus chief executive Tom Enders.

Airbus incurred €463 million (Dh1.191 billion) in charges for scrapping the production of the A380. The first double-decker to go into operation was in 2007 as part of Singapore Airlines’ fleet, and was retired in June 2017. Airbus' shares rallied in morning trading, jumping 5.3 per cent to €109.86 at 10:43am Paris time.

Sheikh Ahmed said Emirates’ order of A330neos and A350s complements the airline's fleet mix, enhances its flexibility and supports the growth of its network. The jets will "play an important role in our future fleet and network plans", he said.

Emirates will operate the A330neos on its regional destinations, helping the airline serve smaller airports and new routes, and also provide the latitude to enhance its global network. The A350s will supplement Emirates’ long-haul operations, providing the airline with added flexibility in terms of capacity deployment on eight to 12-hour routes from its Dubai hub.

Emirates ordering the A330neos and A350s and reducing its original order of A380, lessens "its exposure to the giant jet and arguably introduces more fleet flexibility", said Saj Ahmad, chief analyst of StrategicAero Research.

"This is critical with its deepening relationship with flydubai in its pursuit to expand and capture efficiencies across its growing fleet. Given that Emirates leases all its A380s, it has shielded itself against a new defunct programme and an asset whose values will only decline as time goes on," he said.

Meanwhile, Etihad Aviation Group said it has restructured its aircraft orders after concluding talks with Airbus and Boeing.

The parent of Etihad Airways said on Thursday it will take delivery of five long-range A350-1000 aircraft and 26 A321neos from the European manufacturer Airbus and receive six 777-9x from the US plane maker Boeing.

Middle East airlines will spend about $600bn on new aircraft in the next 20 years, as the fleet size of the regions’ carriers are projected to more than double to 3,320 aircraft in the period, according to Airbus. The region’s carriers will require around 2,590 new aircraft by 2036.

Passenger traffic to and from the Middle East is forecast to grow 5.9 per cent until 2036, beating the world average of 4.4 per cent, according to Airbus projections. The region is forecast to experience the fastest growth rate in the world behind Africa, which is projected to grow by 5.9 per cent to 400 million passengers by 2036, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Dubai Airports aims to eliminate queues as it rebrands

Operator says it will enhance use of tech to improve customer experience

Dubai: Dubai Airports launched on Wednesday its new brand identity as it plans to introduce changes across its airports to improve the passenger experience.

The new brand, with a fresh logo bearing the letters DXB, will see the operator enhance technology at the city’s two airports and launch new retail concepts there. Dubai Airports said it aims to “eliminate” queues at airports and leverage its use of technology.

“Airports are changing, and what we wanted to do is make sure that we focused on the customer experience,” said Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports.

“We don’t want anyone to have to queue. The idea is we will gradually introduce new technology, which will make the processes very efficient and quick. Not only then do passengers not have to wait, that means they’ll have a far more enjoyable experience and we will get greater capacity out of our airports because everyone will be moving much more quickly.”

The changes will take “a few years to fully manifest” themselves across the airports.

Griffiths has long expressed his views about how airports around the world need to up their use of technology, painting a picture of his vision of how airports will look in the future — and it’s a significant difference from how they look today.

In a speech in May 2018, the CEO said he believes technology can remove the pain from travel, by eliminating queues, document checks, and long walks from one gate to another. He described a future where airports have no check-in desks, no immigration, and discreet security procedures that rely on technology such as facial scans.

On Wednesday, Griffiths said he believes the new brand identity, together with improved technology, will help Dubai’s airports to get to that future.

“We’re doing all sorts of things with the transformation of the airport; the visual spaces, the new way we will board passengers on to aeroplanes — so much is changing because tech is delivering us the ability to create far more enjoyable customer experience,” he said.

How To Ensure A Stress-Free Trip When You Travel!

So you went on a nice Xmas and year-end break. Great. But do you still feel tired? Are you still trying to get back into the rhythm of the new year? Feel like the need for another break? We don’t blame you. Often, travelling out of the city during peak seasons like Christmas and New Years can cause what can be best described as ‘holiday stress’.  Even coming into Dubai at a time when the entire world is here to ring in the new year can leave you drained despite all the fun. Overcrowded airports, long queues at check-in, missing baggage, last-minute formalities… however prepared you are for your trip, there is no escaping the hustle and bustle.

But here is where the smart and luxe traveller is different from the rest. Imagine, having the stress of check-in, luggage, immigration etc completely taken care of! Or not having to wait in queues for hours on end when you arrive in the city? Or, if you are the host, ensuring that your guests have a smooth experience when they land? The idea itself fills you with joy and that’s why we recommend the Ahlan Meet & Greet Service to ease off your travel woes. And if you don’t believe us, ask the celebrities who regularly avail of the service.

Dubai International Airport’s premier concierge service is all about exclusivity, personalisation and comfort. Leave the crowd and the mess behind, and let others do the job for you! Whether you are flying into the city or getting out of it, with every need taken care of, right from the time you enter the airport to the minute you board your flight, this is what we call travelling in style.

So what can you expect? If you are travelling out of the city, expect to be welcomed by the representatives right outside the airport.  The next few minutes are magical. Your luggage is taken care of, checked in, the boarding passes handed on to you and immigration formalities are fast-tracked. What a relief!

The next stop is the Ahlan Lounge. The lounge service is utter bliss. This zone is the escape you need from the madding holiday crowd before you embark on your adventure. Plush, swish and supremely comfortable, you can have your own space before it’s time to board. Have a drink, order from a fabulous menu (meaning: you have the option to skip boring flight food!), read or browse in peace, shower and freshen up if you feel the need to (well, if you fancy being clicked like a celebrity in your ‘airport look’ this is how you do it!) and feel completely relaxed. And oh yes, there is a spa too for some quick treatments including facials and massages, if you fancy it.

Energised, when it’s time to board, the representative will be right there, escorting you till the gate. Simply put, every tedious formality is taken care of before you fly. It’s also great if you want to make your guests feel loved and taken care of when they arrive in the city. With them being in safe hands from the moment they disembark, there can’t be a better welcome to Dubai.

Vincent Cris Vios, Manager, Ahlan Meet & Greet Services talks to us

What, in your opinion, is the modern traveller looking for while flying?

We live in tech-driven world. I think modern travellers’ main expectation is efficiency. A quick, time-saving process on everything through upgraded facilities and innovative processes of service operations is what is needed.

Does providing the Ahlan service to celebrities pose a different challenge as opposed to a regular traveller?

None at all, we consider all of our guests as VIPs and emphasize attention on each of our guests’ needs.  Of course, there will be a significant expectation on handling celebrities but we focus on providing the best service and meeting their requirements. I believe these are the keys to providing better services for everyone.

Are you planning to add new services?

There is a lot of potentials to package our Departure Service to one of our many facilities and services inside Dubai International Airports. Last month, we offered, a ‘Timeless experience’ to our departing guests where we provided personalized and seamless meet and greet at departures. When inside the airport, a 30-minute Spa treatment was offered at our Timeless Spa before sending off the guests. We can extend these departure packages where guests can avail our Departure Meet and Greet plus a short stay at the Dubai International Hotel or a quick meal at our Food and Beverage outlets.

Billionth passenger is proof of Dubai's soaring success

The journey from single sand runway to the world's busiest international airport shows the drive and vision that built the city

Those who live in the UAE, a land filled with the biggest, the best and the tallest of things, are largely immune to the vast numbers and superlatives that pass by with the regularity of a Metro train. But every now and then, a figure comes along that is so significant that it simply cannot be ignored. The one billionth passenger to pass through Dubai airport is just such a number. Much has been written about the growth of Dubai, which in under a lifetime has been transformed from a small port to a vibrant metropolis. Oil has played a part, but far less so than widely imagined. Dubai’s share of that blessing was a fraction of that enjoyed by its neighbour.

Abu Dhabi, as part of its strategic bid for sustainability, has chosen to diversify away from reliance on the sale of hydrocarbons, but from the outset Dubai had no choice. Instead its astonishing growth has been founded on two other equally valuable raw materials: imagination and determination. Dubai’s founding visionary was Sheikh Rashid, who ruled from 1958 to 1990. He inherited a relatively poor emirate, whose chief asset was the creek, a partially silted-up inlet that had served as a trading hub for generations. In 1959 Sheikh Rashid saw the way the tide of globalisation was running and, in a bold move, invested a vast sum to transform the creek into a large, modern port. The plan raised eyebrows, but not for long. It paid off handsomely and was followed by many others, inspired by Sheikh Rashid’s build-it-and-they-will-come philosophy.

Among them was Dubai International Airport, built in 1960 with a single runway of compacted sand. This year more than 90 million people will land or take off within sight of the creek where it all began and, on Thursday, what has become the world’s busiest international airport handled its one billionth passenger. It is fitting that that passenger should be a nine-year-old child, a global citizen of the modern world. For him and for Dubai, a city fast becoming synonymous with innovation and opportunity, the ticket to the future bears the three-letter code DXB.

Dubai Airport among world's ten dynamic and attractive airports

The achievement of the Emirate of Dubai to welcome one billion passengers across the five continents shows that it has entered into a new stage in strengthening its international presence.

According to the latest ranking of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, on the world's ten most dynamic and attractive airports, Dubai International Airport, DXB, ranked third after Atlanta and Beijing airports.

International specialised reports show that the number of visitors to Dubai International Airport annually reaches more than 88 million, a number that was celebrated yesterday with the arrival of the billionth passenger, who was received by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Airports.

Reports from international tourism organisations, including ICAO, indicate that the annual number of passengers around the world stood at 4.5 billion, and Dubai Airport was among the top airports, with its unique facilities coupled with entertainment and luxury.

The World Tourism Organisation has named ten most dynamic and crowded airports, with excellent facilities and services, as aesthetic addresses, and Dubai airport has been documented as the largest of its kind in the world in the provision of areas for duty-free shopping. At DXB one can stay for four days without leaving its premises.

The achievements of Dubai Airport were accomplished under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Airports, who is inspired by the country leadership's vision of investment.

With a total area of 670,000 square metres, Dubai Airport has six floors with the capacity to accommodate 90 million passengers, in 4,800 square metres of retail space, and 2,000 square metres of restaurants, and five hotels.

The growth rate of Dubai Airport services, as achieved over the last eight years following the celebration of the arrival of 500 million visitors, are those that qualify Dubai to aspire in making its airport the world's top airports in 2021, Bloomberg reported yesterday.

"The billionth passenger has flown through Dubai International Airport, marking a new phase in its journey towards a bright future. One billion passengers have made DXB a part of their personal story and helped shape Dubai into a global hub," said His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The lucky passengers were given the opportunity not only for shopping and leisure but also for experiencing a social environment of coexistence, multi-religious and multiculturalism, making the UAE the nation of tolerance.

New innovative application at Dubai Airport aims to reduce turnaround delays

Flying through Dubai International Airport is going to get a lot smoother with Emirates' new innovative application Hub Monitor, which was deployed in August to test its potential.

Developed in-house, it provides real-time updates to staff involved in aircraft turnarounds at the airport. Through its monitoring and proactive alerting system, the application helps to avoid delays and improve on-time performance ultimately leading to a better passenger experience.

Around 255 Emirates flights depart Dubai every day, making it crucial for the airline to have fast turnaround times between landing and departure.

It currently takes about 105 minutes to turnaround the Emirates A380, the world’s largest commercial passenger jet, and about 90 minutes to prepare the Boeing 777 aircraft for departure at Emirates’ hub in Dubai.

Some of the activities involved in preparing a plane for takeoff include a complete cleaning of aircraft interiors, water and toilet servicing, flight catering and loading meals for passengers, servicing the aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), refuelling the aircraft, maintenance checks, and loading passenger luggage and cargo.

A delay in one of these processes will create a chain reaction throughout the other operations.

“The Hub Monitor application is a unique and innovative tool developed in line with our vision to continuously re-examine our processes and introduce smart and more efficient means to improve our operations resulting in better passenger experience," says Adel Al Redha, Emirates' executive vice president and COO.

"Our operations team in coordination with IT have led the development of the hub monitoring system in a record time of five months, building on an existing solution that was already developed by Emirates Engineering. The team examining the various functions of Hub Monitor in real time are working to roll out further modules and the next module will be implemented later this month.”

What the application does is monitor the time it takes to complete a process in real time, and pings off an alert if there's any delay or deviation to any above or below wing activity against a pre-set Precision Timing Schedule (PTS). This gives staff at all levels time to preempt and adjust for any delay that might occur.

All this information will be provided to the relevant staff in a mobile format, making the data accessible on-the-go.

Dubai International Airport Welcomes 1 Billionth Passenger in Midst of Sharp Growth Period

The airport's chairman greeted the billionth passenger upon arrival, while Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum celebrated the occasion on Twitter.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) just celebrated its billionth passenger traveling through, with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum marking the occasion on Twitter.

DXB opened its doors in 1960 and saw its 500 millionth passenger pass through in 2011. That increase in the past seven years is fairly substantial, with 74.5 million people using the airport in the first 10 months of this year alone—that’s a sharp rise of 1.5 percent of the same timeframe last year.

The occasion happened to befall a 9-year-old kid flying in from Orlando, Florida, who was greeted along with his family by the DXB chairman. Dubai’s Sheikh, meanwhile, took to social media to commemorate the event.

DXB follows closely behind Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Beijing Capital International as the world’s busiest airport, overall. In terms of international travelers, however, DXB claims it sits firmly at the top. Additionally, airport officials are confident it’ll dethrone the above-mentioned contenders by the end of this decade.

We’ve reported on Dubai International before, most notably when the Civil Aviation Authority decided to implement the Skytrax anti-drone system to monitor registered drones and prevent them from causing cost-heavy airport shutdowns.

The region itself is no stranger tech innovation and international appeal, with local police instating rideable drone bikes to its squads and passenger drones finding a safe haven for active implementation. In the end, having a billion passengers pass through its doors is a strong sign of global attraction, and one that is certainly cause for the city, and the Sheikh himself, to publicly celebrate.
